Weddings today can be a very expensive undertaking. But, as with many other items, a little thought and planning can go a long way in helping you save without sacrificing.

Any bride will tell you that at the end of the day and for the rest of your life all that you have left is your memories and the photos. The first step is to prioritize your expenses. Many brides envision themselves in a priceless designer dress, for example, and blow their entire budget on a gown they will never wear again.

As Nina points out, “Trust me. You’ll get far more wear out of your photos over the years than you will out of your dress.” What you shouldn’t cut, she adds, is quality, where it really counts.

So consider foregoing the open bar with top shelf liquors in favor of a wine bar and put your money towards what you’ll really treasure from your wedding day - your memories.

But that doesn’t mean your wedding photography has to be mind-blowingly expensive, however. There are ways to cut back on costs without cutting back on quality. Nina gives us a few suggestions on how to get the most out of your photographer and your photography budget:

1. “First and foremost, the easiest way to potentially save money,” Nina says, “is to avoid weekends, holidays and the prime summer months, if you can.” It will also make it easier to guarantee the availability of your favorite photographer. In addition the caterer, band and anyone else you hire will usually charge less if you avoid the most popular times.
2. Personalities are important. “This is your day”, Nina advises. “Make sure your photographer and you are on the same page. On your wedding day you don’t want to find yourself upset or disagreeing with your photographer. Sit down with them before you commit, and make sure they’re receptive to taking the types of photos you want for your special day. “
3. Consider taking some shots in advance of the wedding day in the photographer’s studio. With some planning and forethought, you may be able to limit some of the photo taking and then limit the amount of time you will need the photographer at the reception itself.
4. If you have a lot of different group shots in mind, make a list of the groupings you want. Nina suggests giving the list to a reliable friend or relative who is not in the bridal party, rather than asking the photographer to do it. Having them shadow the photographer and check off each desired photo so nothing gets overlooked means you won’t have to worry about it and it will save time which will save money. You don’t need a photographer at the entire reception if you move through the important pictures early and quickly.
5. Ask questions and check references. How long have they been doing wedding photography? Take time to review their sample albums. You want to be sure they take the style of photos that really speak to you. Getting the wrong photographer is the most expensive mistake you can make.
6. Take advantage of the digital age. If money is tight, consider skipping the actual expense of prints in favor of your photos on a disk that you can post on wedding sites for the benefit of both guests and loved ones who were unable to share your special day. You can always return down the road, when your budget is roomier and have that leather-tooled album created, if you really want one.
7. Limit the photographic special effects, too, Nina suggests, and keep it simple. Split frames and multiple exposures can really add up. Ask the photographer what can be done without adding expense and always remember that the effects really don’t add to the memories.
